How Much Money Will I Save?

Will you save money by building a home wind generator or homemade solar panels? Absolutely. How much you will save is an entirely different matter.

If you live in an area where the wind is a constant factor, you will save a substantial amount on your utility bills. Areas that have a relatively low average wind speed will naturally not see as much in annual savings. The same goes for solar energy produced from homemade solar panels. Without a significant amount of yearly sunlight, you cannot benefit as much as areas that have more sunlight year round.

Some areas of the country, and the rest of the world as well, will be more suited for home energy production. I have been in most of the states in America, and some have far more wind and sun on the average than others. People living in the Great Plains live with an almost constant wind. Others living in the hot, arid sections, such as the Southwest, have far more sunlight on the average than other states.

The northeastern coastal areas of the U.S. are good candidates for producing electricity from the wind. Other states that have a better proportion of both wind and sun can better generate power from both sources.

How much you can save is dependent on a variety of other factors too. Some areas of the U.S. have climates that do not necessarily require air conditioning like other areas do. It is almost impossible to endure the long, hot summer months in the Southeastern and Southwestern states without air conditioning. These hot summer months require more electricity and you will in turn have to produce more electricity from wind generators or solar panels to keep up with the extra demands.

Other areas of the country use heating oil as the primary source of heating their homes in the winter months. The milder winter months in the South and Southwest normally require less expense from heating costs. While the heaters that burn heating oil run off of electricity, the cost of the heating oil itself cannot be reduced by building a home windmill or solar panels.

So the best answer as to how much money you can save is best answered by your particular climate. Not all areas are suited for producing a significant amount of energy from the wind or the sun. If you are fortunate enough to live in an area that has an ample supply of both, you can generate enough energy to see huge savings in your utility bills.
